Common Gateway Interface (CGI) is a non-Java-based standard for applications and database serving in the e-business environment. The development and modification time for CGI components is generally longer than that of e-business Java components.

The benefits of creating Web components on iSeries using CGI include:

  • The programming language used is ILE RPG. Companies that have staff familiar with RPG, may modify the CGI components themselves with minimal learning curve
  • There is no need to buy Web Application Server (i.e. IBM WebSphere)
  • Old AS/400 systems (V3R2M0 and later) with installed TCP/IP product option of OS/400 and with a network card can work as a Web server with CGI
  • Minimal or greatly reduced administration required
  • In most cases, the performance of CGI components is better because the business logic is written in RPG using native iSeries data access
